Creating Life-Changing Habits

Forming life-long, life-changing habits requires consistency and dedication.  Here are five easy steps to help you get started!

1.   Start Small and Specific.
Begin by focusing on one small habit that you want to incorporate into your daily routine. Make sure that it’s something specific and achievable. For example, if you want to exercise regularly, start with a 10 minute walk each morning or evening. Starting small allows you to build momentum and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

2.   Set Clear Goals and Intentions.
Clearly define your goals and the reasons why you want to establish this habit. Understand the benefits it will bring to your life and how it aligns with your long-term vision. Writing down your intentions and keeping them visible can serve as a constant reminder and motivation.

3.   Create a Daily Routine.
Consistency is key to forming habits. Establish a daily routine that includes your new habit. Consistency will help your brain and body adapt and reinforces the habit loop. For instance, if you want to develop a reading habit, set aside a specific time each day dedicated to reading a few pages or chapters. (I highly recommend Atomic Habits by James Clear).

4.   Connect Use Triggers and Cues.
Connect your new habit to existing triggers or cues in your environment. For example, if you want to meditate daily, associate it with a specific event, like meditating for 5 mins after brushing your teeth in the morning. Over time, your brain will associate the trigger with the habit, making it easier to remember and perform.

5.   Track Your Progress and Reward Yourself.
Keep a journal or use habit-tracking apps to monitor your progress. Celebrate your successes and acknowledge your efforts, no matter how small. Rewarding ourselves positively reinforces the habit and strengthens our commitment to it.

Forming a life-long habit takes time, patience and consistency.

If you miss a day or slip up, don’t be too hard on yourself. Acknowledge the setback and get back on track the next day.

With perseverance these small changes will have a significant impact on your life.
